Dia de los Muertos Dinner October 30

Next Saturday, October 30 we will be hosting a Dia de los Muertos dinner with some favorite foods for the holiday. Mole, tamales, and champurrado are on the menu, and thanks to a delivery of sugar skull molds from California we'll be attempting some of those as well! As usual, there will be a five course tasting menu with wine pairings for each course, and we're happy to accommodate vegetarians or anyone else with dietary restrictions with advance notice.

There are still some seats available, if you'd like to participate send an email to loteriasupperclub@gmail.com.

Face Your Food

Face Your Food is a new campaign by Fairfood International that is designed to make people think about where their food comes from. People are making videos of themselves eating, which are then automatically slowed down and reversed. The videos are funny, you can see them on youtube or on Facebook, where you can make your own video and post it on your own Facebook wall.

Anyone who is interested can participate in making a video at the October 30 dinner, though of course participation isn't required!

October Dinners

The next dinners will be October 16 and October 30. Recent visitors from California resupplied us with dried chiles, masa, and other staples right in time! We'll be preparing a fall menu with some Dia de los Muertos favorites like mole and champurrado, and are excited to experiment with making our own sugar skulls.

There are still some seats available, so drop us a line at loteriasupperclub@gmail.com if you'd like to join us. We're happy to accommodate vegetarians with advanced notice, and make sure to tell us about any other dietary restrictions or allergies. The suggested donation for the five course menu and wine pairings is 50 Euros.

Next Dinner Saturday, August 28

There are still some spaces left at the next dinner on Saturday, August 28! As usual we will be getting started with a cocktail hour at 19.00 and then moving on to a five course tasting menu with wine pairings. Since the summer heat wave seems to be well and truly over for Berlin I'll put together a summer menu for a cool and rainy evening... Feel free to drop me a line at loteriasupperclub@gmail.com if you have any special requests for the menu! I think it may be time for slow braised lamb birria to make an appearance on the menu again, which will give our friends at Gallerie Orange a good opportunity to choose a nice spicy red wine for us.

Thanks for a great evening!

I had a wonderful time this Saturday! I will post more pictures from guests soon.

Next Dinners Saturday May 22 and May 29

We are excited for the next two dinners, I have been craving mole for a while now and we will finally be putting it on the menu! Each dinner will start at 7:00, and seating is limited to twelve guests or less.

Thanks so much!

What an outstanding evening! We had such a wonderful time hosting last night's group, the company and conversation was great (not to mention the fun of getting flowers from a guest!).

We got a tip about the Weinfest on Rüdesheimer Platz, where you can try wines by different Rheingau vintners and have a picnic. Can't wait to go! Some of those tasty German white wines are delicious with Mexican food, next time we will have to make sure we make enough to have leftovers for a picnic.

Dinner April 29 and May 1

We are very excited for our next two dinners, we'll be getting a personal delivery of the fixings for our family recipe guacamole. We also found another great source for wine, the art gallery/wine shop Gallerie Orange right around the corner on Wülichstrasse. The proprietor is very knowledgeable, the atmosphere is pleasant, and they even host a supper club from time to time with Israeli or Peruvian cuisine!

As always seating is limited to 12 people or less. There are seats left at both, but there is more availability at the dinner on the first. We'll be starting at 8 pm on the 29th, and at the usual time of 7 pm on the first. Email us at loteriasupperclub@gmail.com for reservations.

There have been a few changes to our schedule over the next few weeks, so here's the plan!

*Thursday, April 29. We added a dinner for a group only in town for a short time, there are a few reservations left. This will be a "preview" dinner for the menu we will be serving on May 1.

Check out the Lotería Supper Club in this article!

This article in the "Creative Use of Space" blog (sponsored by Mini/BMW, strangely enough) assures us that supper clubs are here to stay. We hope that the "clandestine culinary tradition" does continue to spread to cities around the world as the author predicts, and that more supper clubs will pop up here in Berlin for us to visit!

What a great evening!

We had a wonderful time last night! Thanks so much to all our guests, and we will definitely be accepting that invitation to come to Denmark and do some dinners... I am imagining a carne asada in that garden with a view of the ocean and I can't wait!

Brandenburg farm trip

One more thing to add to the list of things to love about Berlin is how easy it is to get out to the countryside and visit some of our local farms. Today we went to the Hofladen (farm shop) at Neumanns Erntegarten, had a wonderful walk through fields that are just starting to turn green, and ate a fantastic meal at a restaurant in a stone tower. It's easy to get to Neumanns Erntegarten, just take the S-Bahn to the Potsdam Hauptbanhof and get on the 614 bus. The Heineberg stop is right in front of the entrance to the Hofladen, and once you have checked out their beautiful selection of produce, cheese, meat, dairy, eggs, and wine you can walk back to town through the fields.

The apples looked so good and had such an incredible scent that I think we will have to include them in our menu for the 27th.

Next Dinner Saturday, March 27

We are excited to announce our next dinner on Saturday, March 27. We will be featuring a five course tasting menu with wine pairings and a welcome cocktail. Seating will be limited to twelve guests or less, contact loteriasupperclub@gmail.com to reserve a seat!

Wonderful resource for locally produced foods!

We are so excited to have found this resource for local produce, fish, and meat in the Berlin/Brandenburg area. Over the next week or so we will be taking trips out into the countryside (and within our own neighborhood of Friedrichshain for fresh sprouts!) to find the best local producers, we will keep you updated on what we find. We are really looking forward to a menu at the next dinner on March 20 featuring locally produced fish, pork, and produce.

Thanks!!!

We had a wonderful time with all of our guests, thanks so much for a great night! We loved the way the menu worked out tonight, and of course we have to say thank you as usual to Johnny for the fantastic wine pairings.

And to that certain someone who doesn't like to celebrate his birthday, sorry that we spilled the beans but we were so glad to have you here with us tonight...

Love,

the Lotería Supper Club team

Wine Pairings for Valentine's Dinner!

Last night the Lotería Supper Club team visited Sorsi e Morsi in Prenzlauer Berg to get their genius proprietor's suggestions for wine pairings for the Valentine's Dinner, and we are so excited with the results.

1. 2008 Erste & Neue Kellerei Sauvignon. This bright, fresh, young wine is from the Alto Adige region of Südtirol. It has a well balanced sweetness that will stand up well to the slight spiciness of the squash soup and is complex enough to wake your taste buds up for the rest of the meal. This is no insipid white wine, and I think that even those who prefer red will enjoy it.

2. 2007 Rosa Grande Rosato. We had originally thought to pair the warm spinach salad with roasted beets with a full bodied white, but when Johnny produced the Rosato from Sardinia for us to try we knew it was perfect. I love a good dry Rosé, particularly this one that had flavors of raspberries, rose petals, citrus, and tomato skins.

3. 2005 Tenuta Coppadoro Cotinone. A blend of Aglianico, Montepulciano, and Carbernet Sauvignon aged in oak, the Cotinone comes from Puglia. It's big and bold and has the wood and tannins we were looking for, and will be a good complement for the richness of the braised lamb shanks.

We are still on the search for the perfect port to end the meal with, but the beginning is a family favorite with a twist. My dad is the all time margarita champion, so we will be using his recipe with the addition of some fresh pomegranate juice.

For those of you who have not yet been to Sorsi e Morsi, go immediately. Walk in and tell Johnny what you'd like to drink and he will find the perfect bottle and pour you a taste. If you love it, have a glass. If not, tell him exactly what you don't like about it and he will find you something just right.
